We’re excited to announce an upcoming opportunity for equine veterinarians to gain useful knowledge and hands-on experience in approaching cases of suspected equine abuse or neglect. Through a collaboration between the Ontario Veterinary College and Equine Guelph, and funding from the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare at U of G, we will be hosting a two-part learning series titled Justice in the Barn: Recognize, Report and Respond. 

Part 1: Justice in the Barn: Recognize, Report, and Respond – Understanding Equine Abuse in Veterinary Practice

  • Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 1:00 PM EST
  • 90-minute online webinar on the foundational principles of recognizing signs of equine abuse and neglect in practice, and understanding one’s legal and ethical responsibilities as a veterinarian
  • $25 CAD registration includes access to the live webinar, a webinar recording, and a curated collection of online resources on participating in forensic and welfare investigations

For those interested in gaining more hands-on experience in this area, we will also be hosting an in-person interactive workshop:

Part 2Justice in the Barn: Recognize, Report, and Respond – Practical Investigative Skills for the Equine Veterinarian.

  • DATE: TBD
  • A full-day, immersive workshop for equine veterinarians to further strengthen their skills in navigating cases of suspected equine abuse and neglect.
  • Participants will engage in opportunities to practice essential skills including client communication, evidence handling, and forensic documentation.
  • Registration includes the full-day workshop, lunch and refreshments, and access to supplemental resources on veterinary forensic investigations. The cost of the workshop is $300.00.
  • Please note: spots are limited, and webinar registration is a prerequisite for workshop registration.

This webinar is intended for veterinarians with equine patients.  There is an attestation box on the registration page.

The content of this project will cover topics which some participants may find disturbing including neglect, violence against animals, sexual abuse against animals, and interpersonal violence. Please take care of yourselves and each other.
